It's never a good idea to run. Keith would have known that. Veronica's too inexperienced with the justice system to have figured that out (even though she thinks she knows everything).

If you like Suckerpunches™, you should read YLD1&2 one of these days (well, given the length, *twenty* of these days). (Don't be put off by the Mac/Dick, it's very very slight and mostly for comic relief, and !SPOILER! they're broken up by the beginning of YLD2.)
