Surprisingly enough, I think on fanfiction the PG13 version is being read more than the NC17 version. You know, I used to get lots of comments during YLD2 that people were skimming the erotic content, because they were mostly reading for plot. (I think only my betas read my Duncan smut...and I *sweated* over that chapter like you wouldn't believe.)
And there's usually important stuff going on in these sections, even if it's smutty, so I want people who are squeamish about reading NC17 to still be able to enjoy the fic. The exercise of making it less smutty was interesting as well. The PG13 version is still pretty erotic, I think; however, the actions are restricted to things that can be shown on your TV.
I also considered just doing one of those cursor scan things that I do for foreign languages, with a caption of what you're supposed to getting from the scene...closed captioned for the erotically impaired. But that unfortunately wouldn't work on FF.
And of course...above all, think of the young 'uns. Vanessa says: "Put your pants on and go check out Neopets."
