Here's a secret: a lot of times my research drives the plot. In fact, when I'm stuck, that's usually how I get out of it. I hesitated to have so much sailing in a fandom that's mostly not familiar with the terminology, but having them go through a violent storm fit the mood I was in while I was writing this.
